Dry Needling

Relieve Pain and Restore Function with Dry Needling at Kintsugi Physical Therapy & Wellness

Dry needling is an effective, minimally invasive treatment option to address musculoskeletal discomfort. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or struggling with chronic pain, dry needling can play a key role in your overall treatment program.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a specialized technique in which one of our physical therapists inserts thin, sterile needles into trigger points–tight knots of connective tissues that can cause muscle tension, pain, and restricted mobility.

Unlike medications that simply mask the pain, dry needling directly addresses the underlying problem, helping your muscles relax and function better. This treatment is safe, effective, and complements other physical therapy techniques, such as manual therapy or therapeutic exercise.

Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture: What’s the Difference?

On the surface, dry needling seems very similar to acupuncture, a type of Chinese medicine that also involves inserting thin needles into key parts of the body. However, the purpose and techniques are different:

  • Dry needling focuses on releasing trigger points to restore proper function. It is grounded in modern Western medicine and can be compared to “wet needling,” which involves injecting trigger points with medication. (Note that no medication is used for dry needling.)
  • Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that aims to balance energy flow throughout the body.

Conditions Treated with Dry Needling

  • Muscle Pain and Tightness: Relieves tension and discomfort caused by trigger points
  • Sports Injuries: Supports recovery from strains, sprains, and overuse injuries
  • Tendonitis: Helps reduce inflammation and improve muscle function
  • Chronic Pain Conditions: Helps manage symptoms of fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, and similar conditions
  • Headaches and Migraine: Reduces tension in muscles that contribute to head pain
  • Joint Pain: Addresses muscular issues that cause or worsen joint discomfort, including discomfort from arthritis
  • Neck and Back Pain: Targets deep-seated muscle knots to restore mobility

What to Expect During Your Dry Needling Session

We design dry needling sessions at Kintsugi Physical Therapy & Wellness to be as simple and comfortable for you as possible. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Assessment: We’ll start by assessing your pain, movement restrictions, and other symptoms to identify the target areas.
  • Needle Placement: Next, we’ll carefully insert thin, sterile needles into the targeted trigger points. You may feel a mild muscle twitch or slight discomfort, which is a positive sign the muscle is releasing. Most sessions last 15-30 minutes.
  • Additional Treatment:We’ll create a personalized treatment plan to optimize the results of your dry needling sessions, such as targeted stretches or strengthening exercises. Most patients report feeling better immediately or within a few days.
