A Holistic Approach to Resolving Back and Neck Pain

Does your back pain limit activities like sitting, lifting, or bending? Do you notice pain or stiffness when turning your neck while driving? Are you frustrated that your back or neck pain never seems to go away? At Kintsugi Physical Therapy & Wellness, we offer holistic care to ensure we help our patients have successful outcomes!
Low back pain is one of the most common ailments that just about everyone deals with at one point in their lives. It is estimated that 80 % of all Americans experience lower back pain, one of the most common reasons people miss work and the second most common reason people visit the doctor’s office.
Additionally, neck pain has been found to affect up to 70% of the population, and up to 85% of those people will have multiple bouts of neck pain over the next five years. For some, the lucky ones, their neck (or back) pain only lasts a few days. For others, the pain lingers for years or comes back repeatedly and never really goes away for good.
Our physical therapists at Kintsugi Physical Therapy & Wellness are experts at treating back and neck pain and have solutions that will work for you. We know that the key to success is taking care of the whole person and addressing all the factors contributing to your condition. This holistic approach is the foundation for our success!

Common causes for back and neck pain
Sometimes we can identify the exact reason for back or neck pain, for example, after a particularly grueling day of yard work or at the end of a work day of prolonged postures. But often, the main reason seems to be no apparent reason.
Low back pain is one of the most common reasons for emergency room visits, but unfortunately, the exact mechanism causing the pain is not always clear. It has been reported that most people with lower back pain in the prior year will have a recurrence that is often more intense and lasts longer.
In some cases, the cause of lower back pain is more obvious, including the following examples:
- Injury or trauma (car accident or sports injury)
- An awkward movement (slip or twist)
- Improper lifting technique
- Repetitive motions like bending or twisting
- Prolonged inactivity (i.e., sitting or standing)
Our Kintsugi Physical Therapy & Wellness physical therapists are dedicated to treating the whole person, which means, in addition to identifying the possible causes, we also look at your past medical history, your age, physical fitness, sleep habits, and various other potential factors that may contribute to your condition. Our goal is to address you entirely to ensure you achieve the best possible outcomes!
Neck pain is another common condition with multiple factors that may contribute to the source of pain and dysfunction. Similar to lower back pain, the vast majority of people will experience neck pain at some point in their lives. Estimates as high as 70% of all people will have neck pain, and up to 85% of those will have recurring neck pain.
Neck pain is a multifactorial disease, and several risk factors can contribute to its development, including the following:
- The lack of physical activity
- Duration of daily computer use
- Poor postural habits
- Perceived stress
- Trauma (i.e., whiplash)
Unfortunately, too often, those who experience back or neck pain do not all seek help to address the pain. Despite the evidence that early intervention will often lead to a faster resolution, too often, people try to rest, use over-the-counter medicine, or search the internet and try exercises at home without knowing what they are doing for their particular situation.
If you are looking for a holistic approach with solutions shown to work, our Kintsugi Physical Therapy & Wellness physical therapist can guide you through the treatments that will significantly improve your outcomes!
How physical therapy at Kintsugi Physical Therapy & Wellness can help you feel good again
Your (town) therapist will take a thorough history and perform a whole-body physical exam at your initial assessment. Our questions aim to find the root cause of your pain and identify any contributing factors contributing to your pain and dysfunction.
Our experts will use this information to design an individualized program tailored to your situation. Our therapists will initially implement strategies to minimize your pain and restore lost mobility.
Your therapist will likely use targeted manual therapy techniques and mobility exercises to help you improve/restore your range of motion and reduce muscle tension. As you progress, we will teach you exercises that help restore your strength in the muscles of your entire back, including your upper and lower back muscles.
In addition, at Kintsugi Physical Therapy & Wellness, we offer special programs that can assist your recovery and make sure you find lasting relief and prevent future episodes. Our programs teach self-management strategies and work to improve your overall quality of life!
